Gydoo Review: Is This Gay Video Chat Moderated? - chathoppa.com
Gay

Gydoo is a free chat site for gay men. It pairs you with someone who’s online right now for text, voice, photo or video chat, all in your browser and without an account. It’s quick to try and offers a genuinely useful way to hide your IP address from strangers, but it relies on users to report bad behavior, and its own statements about what it stores don’t fully agree.

This review explains how Gydoo works, how far its moderation and privacy go, what to do when it won’t load, and which alternatives suit you better if it isn’t the right fit. It’s based on Gydoo’s homepage and FAQ, checked in October 2026, plus independent sources for the alternatives. Where a claim comes only from Gydoo, we say so.

How Gydoo works

You open Gydoo in your browser and set who you want to meet: gender, which countries, and an age range from 18 to 70. Gydoo then matches you with someone who’s online now, based on those preferences and your interests. Profile options are male, trans and couple. If a chat isn’t going anywhere, you move on to the next match.

Once you’re matched, you can:

  • Send text messages, for openers or when you’d rather keep the camera off.
  • Send voice messages.
  • Share photos and videos. Gydoo says they must be taken with the website’s built-in camera, which should make it harder to send old or downloaded pictures.
  • Start a video call, which Gydoo describes as high resolution.

There’s no email, phone number or account. A short profile with your age and preferences is enough, and Gydoo says your description, photos and personal details stay in your browser.

Is Gydoo free?

Yes. Gydoo says there are no hidden fees, no premium subscription and no paywall. Every filter is free, including gender filtering, which some rivals such as Chatspin charge for. Gydoo doesn’t explain how it makes money; the site links to partner sites and an affiliate program.

Is there a Gydoo app?

No. Gydoo runs entirely in the browser on desktop, tablet and phone. It names Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android, so there’s nothing to install. An app called Gaydoo on Google Play is a separately listed dating app, not Gydoo’s chat site.

Is Gydoo moderated?

Only partly. Gydoo says messages aren’t stored, so it can’t read or review conversations. Moderation therefore depends on users reporting each other.

  • Reporting: Open the other user’s profile and use the report button.
  • Serious incidents: Gydoo advises contacting the relevant authorities with the reported user’s ID, and says it can share the metadata it keeps on request so the user can be identified.
  • Leaving: You can end any chat and move on at any time.
  • Age: Gydoo’s age filter starts at 18. We haven’t independently verified Gydoo’s minimum-age policy.
  • Identity: There’s no verification beyond the age you enter.

Because Gydoo can’t see what was said, your report and the other user’s ID are the main evidence. Don’t share anything you wouldn’t want screenshotted.

What Gydoo stores about you

Gydoo’s privacy approach is to keep little on its servers, but its homepage and FAQ don’t describe it in quite the same way:

  • On its servers: The FAQ says Gydoo keeps your age, preferences, basic matching criteria and IP address.
  • For how long: The FAQ says your user ID and IP address may be kept for up to six months to support law enforcement requests. The homepage says “Nothing is stored on our servers. Ever.” but also that it stores IP addresses long-term. Assume your IP address is kept.
  • In your browser: Your profile description, photos and personal details. Gydoo says the delete button at the bottom of the page clears them, and an incognito window wipes them automatically.
  • Encryption: Gydoo says it uses WebRTC encryption and that only you and the person you’re chatting with can read your messages. We haven’t independently verified this.
  • Who runs it: Neither the homepage nor the FAQ names the company behind Gydoo.

Private browsing clears what Gydoo leaves on your device, but it doesn’t hide you from the person you’re talking to. Our guide to incognito chat explains what it does and doesn’t protect.

Hide your IP address with Enhanced Security

A direct peer-to-peer connection can reveal your IP address to the person you’re chatting with. Gydoo’s optional Enhanced Security mode routes the connection through a relay server instead, which Gydoo says may slightly delay connection setup. Gydoo recommends it for users in countries where homosexuality is persecuted, and it’s worth switching on anywhere your privacy matters.

Why Gydoo isn’t loading or connecting

Most connection problems have a simple cause:

  • VPN or proxy: Gydoo says it blocks VPN and proxy connections. If you only use a VPN out of habit, switch it off and reload the page. If you rely on it for privacy or safety, keep it on and choose a VPN-compatible alternative instead.
  • Camera and microphone: Check that your browser has permission to use them, and close other apps that are using the camera.
  • Outdated browser: Update to the latest version of your browser.
  • Enhanced Security: The relay can make connections take a little longer to set up.
  • Weak connection: Calls run peer-to-peer, according to Gydoo, so quality depends on both your connection and your match’s. On weak mobile data, expect the occasional stutter.

Gydoo alternatives

If you want something Gydoo doesn’t offer, these are the closest options. For a wider selection, see our guide to random video chat.

Alternative Best for How it differs from Gydoo
Gayconnect Gay video or text chat with member cam shows Adds cam shows to watch; Gydoo focuses on one-to-one chat
Chatrandom (Gay Chat) A gay chat mode inside a bigger chat network Room-based chat, with more filters on its premium plan
Chatspin Random video chat with mobile apps Has iOS and Android apps and a general audience; its gender filter needs Chatspin Plus
OmeTV General random video chat A wider general audience, without a gay focus
Taimi LGBTQ+ dating and social networking Requires registration; adds profiles, events and livestreams

Should you use Gydoo?

Gydoo suits adults who want quick, no-commitment chats with other gay men and would rather keep personal details off a company’s servers. No account, no cost and the Enhanced Security relay make it easy to try, but weigh that against its limited moderation and unverified privacy claims before sharing anything personal.

It’s a poor fit if you need verified profiles or long-term matching, have to stay on a VPN, or want independently verified encryption and clear limits on data retention. If you’d rather find community than random matches, explore other options in our guide to LGBTQ chat spaces.

If you try it, start with broad filters, turn on Enhanced Security if your IP address matters, and report anyone who crosses the line. If you decide it’s suitable, try Gydoo.
